The Book of Hebrews
Hebrews shows Christ as superior to all that came before — the great high priest and the once-for-all sacrifice — urging perseverance in faith against the temptation to fall back.
- Testament
- New (13 chapters)
- Type
- Epistle
- Author
- Unknown. Traditionally Paul; many ancient and modern scholars suggest Apollos, Barnabas, Priscilla, or another early Christian preacher.
- Date
- Probably before 70 AD (the Temple sacrifices are still described as ongoing).
Christ greater than the angels, Moses, the priests, the sacrifices
Each chapter shows another way Christ surpasses the old covenant — better priesthood (4-7), better covenant (8), better sacrifice (9-10). The book was written for Jewish Christians tempted to return to Judaism: Hebrews answers, 'don't go back, you'd be trading the substance for the shadow.'
Faith through history
Chapter 11 — the 'hall of faith' — walks from Abel through Abraham to the prophets, naming the men and women who lived by faith in things unseen. Chapter 12 then exhorts: 'let us run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith' (12:1-2).
Key verses (KJV)
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” — Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
“Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” — Hebrews 4:16 (KJV)
“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” — Hebrews 13:8 (KJV)
How to read Hebrews
Hebrews rewards slow reading — its argument about priesthood and sacrifice unfolds carefully. Chapter 11 (faith), 12 (perseverance) and 13 (final exhortations) work well as standalone reads. If new to Hebrews, start with chapter 11 and work outward.
