1 Thessalonians encourages a young church in faith, holiness, and a clear hope in the return of Christ — one of Paul's earliest letters and warmest in tone.

Testament
New (5 chapters)

Epistle
Author
Paul, with Silvanus and Timothy.

About 50-51 AD — probably Paul's earliest surviving letter.

Faith, hope and love at the beginning

Paul thanks God for the Thessalonians' 'work of faith, and labour of love, and patience of hope' (1:3). This triad — faith, hope, love — recurs throughout the New Testament as a shorthand for whole Christian life.

Hope in Christ's return

Chapters 4-5 give the clearest New Testament description of Christ's return — 'the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout... and the dead in Christ shall rise first' (4:16). The point is pastoral comfort, not speculative timeline.

Key verses (KJV)

“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (KJV)
“For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:9 (KJV)
“Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:18 (KJV)
